Ficus carica 'Mission'
Also known as Franciscana, due to its introduction by Spanish missionaries to the California coast. The most popular and well known fig in the US, Mission produces 2 crops of large, tear drop-shaped fruits with thin, purple-black skin and richly flavored, sienna-colored flesh. It is heavy bearing and long-lived. Can be almost everbearing in warm climates. Fruits will split at the peak of ripeness.
Grows well in California (on the coast or inland) and sets both an overwintering crop in early summer and a crop in the fall. Hardy to about 15 degrees, but will die back to the ground at 32F or below. 100 chill hours.
This variety is grown from tissue culture and has been heat-treated to significantly reduce the presence of Fig Mosaic Virus.
